Dear Business Owner or Marketing Manager,

If you're here, you probably know that 3 out of the top 4 search engines deliver Google results. Yahoo, AOL and Google all deliver Google search results.

And you probably found my site on Google.  See? Google works.

If your web site has never been on the first page Google, it's hard to know what you're missing. I see it all the time. Large company vice presidents of sales can't believe how many goods leads they start getting from the Internet once they're on the first page of Google -- in the free listings.

Imagine having your phone ring, having emails show up -- from people who are in the market right now for what you sell. Now that's fun. Cold calls are not fun. But a certain number of people out there are looking for what you sell right now. If they find you and call or email YOU -- that's fun.

The fact is that in 2004 in most industries -- for most products and services -- people are using Google to shop around, compare features, research vendors -- almost everything related to buying your product or service. Even if your competitor makes a cold call, the prospect will get on Google after the sales person leaves and see what else is out there. And if you come up on top, you're already credible. Most people have no clue why one company or another is higher on Google. Usually, BIG companies are on top. If your web site is on the top of Google, your prosopects start out thinking you must be one of the "good ones" in your industry.

But what about pay-per-clicks, Overture, Google AdWords, etc?
Can't you do well with pay-per-clicks? Yes, of course you can "do well." But never as well as if you can come up in the free listings on the first page of Google (in the Top 10).

Here's the rule in a nutshell: If people are actively looking for what you sell, you need to be there when they're looking -- or your competitors will and you may not even get to be in the game.

In fact, there is both an art and a science (mostly science) to managing pay-per-click campaigns. And there are some good e-books out there on how to do it.
