Some Tips for Buying Quality Bar Stools and Counter Stools

A perfectly matched set of accent bar and counter stools will never command the kind of attention that a chandelier or Tiffany lamp will.  But, unlike an ornate light fixture that will stand out as a central point in the décor, the right counter and bar stools can unify a space in ways that a chandelier cannot.  Available in metal or wood frames and in a variety of finishes and designs, bar stools and counter stools are the perfect complement to any kitchen or den to give any room a completed look.  Obviously you will want the perfect stools for you home so here are a few tips to keep in mind when shopping.

Have you ever sat on some kitchen counter bar stools where your chin barely cleared the bar or table that you were sitting at?  Maybe you have had the pleasure of sitting on some really tall bar stools that had you perched above your drinks or food so high that you had to bend over to take a sip or bite.  Clearly counter and bar stools come in different sizes so you will want to find the ones that will be suited for your counter, table, or bar.  You are looking to find bar stools and counter stools that are 9-13 inches shorter than the top of the space you wish to sit at.  So, if you have a kitchen counter that is 36 inches tall, you will want kitchen counter stools that are roughly 24 inches tall.

So that you do not go out and purchase 4 pub table bar stools when you only need three, you need to know how many stools you need for your space.  The number of bar and counter stools you need depends on two things:  the length of the counter or bar you intend to sit at, and the options on the bar stools themselves.  For smaller counter and bar stools, divide the length of the counter by 21 inches and that is the number of stools you will need.  If you have some fancy wood swivel counter stools or even some wood bar stools with arms, you will want to divide the length of the bar or counter by 24 inches or more.  Any stool that swivels or has arms on it will need more space than some discount bar stools that are stationary and do not rotate.

Finally, you want to decide upon what kind of frame you want your bar stools and counter stools to be made out of:  wood or metal?  A wood bar stool tends to have a warmer, more inviting, appeal than one made out of metal.  Still, for those with a modern or contemporary décor, metal bar stools and counter stools will accent the interior design better.

Buying bar and counter stools can truly complete the effect of any décor.  You want to make sure that you buy them at the right height and that you have enough for the space you wish to use them with.  Deciding upon the base of your counter and bar stools is really a stylistic choice but will greatly impact how your stools affect the mood and atmosphere of the room.  Remember, these may not be chandeliers, but the right barstools and counter stools can unite a décor like few other furnishings and truly complete a room—so choose carefully!
